Ffion and Lydia from The Flood Hub People team spent half a day volunteering to help improve the outdoor spaces for Together Housing Group’s tenants.
The volunteering afternoon was a rewarding experience that not only enhanced the garden environment for the residents, but also gave Ffion and Lydia the opportunity to connect with residents who also volunteered with the gardening tasks too.
Their main task for the afternoon involved weeding the flower beds and planters so they were ready for the summer season with a refresh of new plants and flowers. They worked alongside the residents and other volunteers to transform the tired-looking gardens into colourful spaces which residents can enjoy.

Well-maintained flower beds and planters help create healthier, more attractive green spaces which improve local biodiversity by providing habitats and food sources. The soil health of the gardens was improved which in turn aids in managing localised flood risk as healthy soil holds significantly more water than degraded or compacted soil.
Improving these green spaces can contribute to residents’ wellbeing, creating a more pleasant environment that encourages people to spend time outdoors and take pride in their surroundings.
A combination of poor weather, several garden areas needing improvement and the age demographic of many residents made the afternoon a significant task to refresh them. But residents’ appreciation and enthusiasm brought home the positive difference Ffion and Lydia had made to the environment around their homes.
By improving the appearance and health of the communal garden areas, the team helped create spaces that residents can enjoy as a community. These greener, colourful areas make neighbourhoods feel more welcoming, and help improve the environment and biodiversity.
After a productive afternoon of gardening and teamwork, the residents kindly invited the team indoors to enjoy a well-earned brew and a biscuit where they were rewarded to see the immediate impact of their effort and be reminded of the importance of giving back to the community.

Another planter before any weeding was carried out. This planter also contained litter so it had to be carefully cleaned before any gardening could take place.
