Education Content Creation

One of the main services that we offer is content creation and we have a wealth of experience writing education packages and resources. As the people behind The Flood Hub website, we have written and produced all of the content, as well as education packages which range from key stage 2 to key stage 4, as well as a number of the other  resources in their ‘Learning’ section. This page highlights the education packages and resources we have written and produced and a bit about each one.

KS2 Flooding Lessons

This education package aims to increase young people’s knowledge on flooding and flood risk management and are pitched at KS2 level (ages 7 to 11), although a lot of the material included can be adapted for other key stage levels.

There are 10 lessons about managing  flood risk from source to sea and each lesson pack contains a PowerPoint lesson, a lesson plan with teacher’s notes, and resources such as worksheets or instructions which may be required for in-class exercises or homework. You can view the lessons here: https://thefloodhub.co.uk/ks2-flooding-lessons-access/

Since launch in March 2021, we have some really great feedback about the lessons which can be seen below:

Thank you! I really enjoyed using these materials when teaching our environment topic on rising sea levels and flooding in the spring term. We teach rivers in the autumn term and i can already see these resources proving very useful indeed.

Teacher

Thank you so much for making resources that can be used by a non specialist teacher but to a depth that is needed.

Teacher

I’ve shared with both my daughters primary school but also with my sons high school as I have been working with them on climate change and flood resilience and adaptation topics in geography lessons. Feedback was that the material would be excellent for yr 7 lower ability classes but also easily adaptable for higher ability classes and years above.

Parent

Despite the fact that flooding is becoming an increasingly regular problem, there are not man good resources out there to help teach the children to understand why it occurs and what it means. Until I came across your resources, I really struggling to find anything appropriate for KS2 – everything was KS3 focused. The resources were colourful and engaging and allowed me to key the key points without getting too immersed in the detail which comes in KS3. Many thanks.

Teacher

Thank you so much for creating and sharing these materials on rivers and flooding. They are so informative and will really get the children thinking about the causes and impact of flooding and action we can take to prevent flooding. This will also tie in nicely with work we do as a school raising awareness of the UN Global Goals with our children and awareness of climate issues.

KS2 Climate Change Lessons

This education package is all about climate, weather and climate change and aims to increase young people’s knowledge on climate change. The lessons are also pitched at KS2 level (ages 7 to 11), although a lot of the material included can be adapted for other key stage levels.

Each lesson pack contains a PowerPoint lesson, a lesson plan with teacher’s notes, and resources such as worksheets or instructions which may be required for in-class exercises or homework. You can view the lessons here: https://thefloodhub.co.uk/ks2-climate-change-lessons/ .

Take a look at some of the feedback below that we have received since launch in February 2023.

I’m a home schooling mum and used the materials for my children and their friends ages between 6-10 year olds. I’m glad I found the presentations, made my task easy. The younger ones liked the activities (labelling, joining etc) and the older ones followed through the lesson. Thank you.

Parent

I found the materials very useful because it has the teachers notes, worksheets and power points. Easy to adapt according to your year groups.

Teacher

I loved using this resource with my year 4 class, excellent information and starting point for discussions. Thank you for providing a free resource on such an important topic!

Teacher

I found the sequencing of the lessons effective and clear – supports a structured presentation of the topic. The interspersed video clips are engaging and informative for the pupils. The material is well levelled – not too basic or superficial in content and not so high a level that is beyond the leaning capacity of UKS2. Thank you for this very useful resource.

Teacher

Very useful. I used with a Year 5 class. Materials were in line with sustainability curriculum. Links to YouTube clips and additional resources were very helpful.

KS3 Weather and Climate Lessons

This is an eight-theme education package designed for KS3 students, helping them explore weather, climate, influencing factors and the impacts of climate change. The resource is structured around eight key themes that follow the national curriculum, helping students build a strong understanding of weather, climate, and climate change. Each theme includes a PowerPoint, teacher’s notes, and a student worksheet to support classroom delivery.

These resources are intended to complement existing teaching, teachers can adapt and incorporate them into their own lessons and curriculum plans as needed. Take a look at the education package here: https://thefloodhub.co.uk/ks3-weather-and-climate-lessons/

KS4 River Landscapes Lessons

The GCSE KS4 lesson package covers everything from river processes and profiles, to landforms, flooding, hydrographs and river management. This package complements the River Flood Management GCSE case study: Low Crosby, Cumbria which can be accessed here.

There are 7 lessons which are designed to support most examination boards and are intended to complement existing teaching and teachers can adapt and incorporate them into their own lessons as needed. Each lesson features a PowerPoint lesson which concludes with practice GCSE-style questions, worksheets which can be completed in-class or as homework and a structured lesson plan.

GCSE Storm Babet Case Study

We wrote a GCSE case study all about Storm Babet made up of a PowerPoint lesson, teachers notes and worksheets. The case study discusses the cause of Storm Babet and its social, economic, and environmental impacts. It also examines the strategies which were implemented to mitigate the risks and impacts, and creates discussions about the changing extreme weather in the UK.

UK Storm Recap Top Trumps

We have produced Storm Top Trumps cards since the 2020 – 2021 storm season and they provide a detailed recap of the storms that impacted the UK during a storm year. Students can cut them out to compare the different storms and their impacts from the season. These flashcards are designed to fit within the KS2 and KS3 Geography modules.

Supplementary Education Resources

The supplementary education resources highlight just some of the flood resilience resources that we have written and created for The Flood Hub and The Flood Hub’s Knowledge Hub, which can also be used to supplement some of the education resources that we have created.
